White Gold

We all know that rice is an important staple food crop throughout Asia, including Indonesia. Many of us are feeling the impact of rising rice prices. A life without rice is hard to imagine. So far, there is no end in sight regarding the price hikes. Some journalists have coined the term “white gold” when mentioning rice. What’s going on ?

As world population increases, so does the demand for more rice. Climate changes due to “Global Warming” haven’t helped matters. The world’s largest exporter of rice is currently Thailand. At the moment, Thailand has a surplus of around 2 million tons, which it wants to sit on, in case there is a shortage in that country in the next six months due to possible bad weather.

Indonesia first gained rice self-sufficiency in 1984, but several years later, became the world’s largest importer. It now seems that Indonesia returned to having a surplus last year, (1 million tons in 2007). In 2008, Indonesia’s rice production is expected to rise slightly to 61 million tons. With Indonesia’s rapidly growing population, it’s difficult to see how the country can maintain a surplus as well as curtailing the soaring prices in local markets.

For much of my life, I believed that all rice was much the same in taste. Of course, that’s not true. Hence the widely different prices for different grades and types. As is always the case, the poorest people will be the ones who suffer the most from increasing prices. :( Like I said…There is no end in sight.
